Capturing Love in Boulder: A Memorable Maternity Session with a Boulder Photographer

As a professional Boulder photographer, I recently had the honor of capturing a truly unforgettable maternity session in this scenic Colorado city. The session was a whirlwind of natural elements, featuring mosquitoes, rain, clouds, and thunder. Nevertheless, we embraced the surprises Mother Nature threw our way, resulting in a series of stunning photographs that beautifully portray the love and excitement of impending parenthood.

Setting the Scene: A Boulder Maternity Session

As a Boulder photographer, I am constantly inspired by the breathtaking beauty of this city's landscapes. For this maternity session, I had the pleasure of working with a radiant mama-to-be, donning a gorgeous pink dress that perfectly complemented the surrounding natural beauty. Her partner sported a fun floral shirt, adding a touch of personality and liveliness to the images. However- let’s be honest- the real stars were their adorable dogs, dressed in big sister bibs.

Dealing with the Elements

While it was picturesque, we were soon reminded of nature's unpredictable temperament. The warm summer weather attracted a battalion of mosquitoes, eager to join the photo shoot. As an essential lesson learned, bug spray became our best friend, and I quickly discovered that it was wiser to insist on bringing bug spray rather than suggest it.

As I began capturing the couple's beautiful moments, dark rain clouds crept in stealthily from the horizon. The thunder started to roll in. We ran with it and luckily, the rain didn’t catch up to us until we were nearly back at our cars.

One of the most delightful aspects of this maternity session was the spontaneity that came along with the unforeseen elements. The couple's love for each other, combined with their humor and positive outlook, made it easy to adapt to the changing conditions. They laughed and joked around and their joy was perfectly captured on camera.

Lessons Learned

  1. Prepare for Nature's Surprises: The most crucial lesson learned from this session was to always be prepared for the unexpected. Despite weather forecasts, nature can be unpredictable, and as a photographer, it's essential to have backup plans and equipment to handle various conditions.

  2. Bug Spray: A Colorado Must-Have: When shooting outdoors during warm weather, bug spray should be an essential item in your photography toolkit. Protecting yourself and your clients from pesky mosquitoes will help everyone stay focused on creating beautiful moments.

  3. Embrace the Unexpected: Instead of letting adverse weather conditions dampen the session, use them to your advantage. Rain, clouds, and thunder can add a unique and magical touch to the photographs, creating memorable images that stand out from the norm.

  4. Positive Attitude is Key: As a photographer, your attitude sets the tone for the entire session. Embrace challenges with a positive mindset, and your clients will follow suit. The couple's laughter and willingness to make the best of the situation made all the difference in the outcome of this maternity shoot.
