When everyone is finally in the same place, it matters.

Extended family sessions are about more than a group photo. They’re about grandparents with their grown kids, cousins who don’t see each other often enough, and families coming together for a rare moment that deserves to be documented well.

I specialize in extended family photography for large and multi-generation families, whether you’re gathering locally in Boulder or visiting Colorado together for a reunion or vacation.

Thoughtful, calm, fun photo sessions for big families

Photographing extended families takes a different skill set than a typical family session. More people, more personalities, more moving parts.

My approach is structured enough to keep things moving smoothly, but relaxed enough that it never feels stiff or rushed. I’ll guide the group when it’s helpful, then step back to capture the in-between moments that happen naturally when families are together.

You don’t need to worry about organizing everyone or managing the flow. I’ve got it covered.

What an extended family session looks like

Extended family sessions are thoughtfully paced and customized based on your group. Before the session, we’ll talk through what matters most to you so we can prioritize the relationships and groupings that feel most important.

During your session, we’ll typically capture:

  • The full extended family together

  • Grandparents with all grandchildren

  • Individual families within the larger group

  • Cousins together

  • Natural, candid moments as everyone interacts

The exact flow may shift depending on your family, the ages involved, and what you care about most, but the goal is always the same: a gallery that feels complete and meaningful, not just one image where everyone is looking at the camera.

Locations: Boulder, Rocky Mountain National Park & Beyond

Colorado is an incredible place to gather, and I help families choose locations that work well for larger groups.

Some favorite options include:

  • The foothills around Boulder

  • Rocky Mountain National Park

  • Private properties, vacation rentals, or family homes. Staying at an AirBNB? Happy to head out there!

I’ll help you think through accessibility, walking distance, parking, and group size so the location supports the experience, not complicates it.

Extended family sessions in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of my favorite places to photograph extended families. The open meadows, mountain views, and quieter pockets of the park create space for larger groups without feeling crowded or chaotic. And there’s elk! And moose!

When planning an extended family session in RMNP, I’ll help you choose a location that works well for your group size, walking ability, and timing, and I’ll guide you through any timed entries or logistics needed. The goal is always the same: a relaxed experience and a gallery that reflects both your family and the place you gathered.

  • Any session that includes multiple immediate families, grandparents, or a large multi-generation group.

  • I regularly photograph groups ranging from 10 to 20+ people. Larger groups may require additional planning time and permitting.

  • That’s expected. I work quickly through groupings and leave space for kids to be themselves. Some of the best images come after the posing falls apart.

  • I provide simple styling guidance so the group looks cohesive without feeling overly coordinated. You’ll also receive a style guide and access to my client closet.

  • Extended family sessions tend to book earlier, especially for summer and fall. As soon as you have dates in mind is ideal.

Frequently Asked Questions

We hired Jill to photograph a very special family reunion….my extended family had not all been together in 3 years. Jill went above and beyond before the shoot even started. The forecast showed rain on the only day we were able to shoot and she personally scouted locations where we would still be able to make it work. On the day of, Jill was warm, engaging and professional. Everyone in my family remarked how wonderful she was to work with. The most important part, though….the photographs were AMAZING! She was able to capture our large group so beautifully and bring out some truly special moments. She has given us photographs we will cherish forever.
