There's something about fall evenings in Boulder that makes me want to slow everything down. The changing leaves, the golden grasses, and that beautiful, warm light just before sunset. It's one of my favorite times of year for family photography.
For this fall family session, we headed to Bobolink Trail in Boulder, Colorado, with two sweet kids and their very lovable Bernese Mountain Dog. We spent the evening wandering along tree-lined paths, exploring near the creek, and soaking up the last of the golden light.
And this is exactly what I love about family photography. The moments in between. A little sister reaching for her brother's hand. Kids wrapping their arms around their dog. A quiet hug from mom. Those are the memories I want families to have years from now.
Why Bobolink Trail Is a Beautiful Location for Boulder Family Photos
Bobolink Trail is one of those locations that offers a little bit of everything without having to venture very far. There are winding paths beneath the cottonwood trees, a creek, wide-open grassy fields, and beautiful mountain views.
In the fall, the entire area takes on these gorgeous golden and earthy tones. The trees create a soft, filtered light earlier in the session, and as the sun gets lower, the open fields become absolutely magical.
I especially love locations like this for families with younger children. Rather than standing in one spot and asking everyone to smile at the camera, we can wander, explore, and let the kids be kids. There's room to move, room to play, and plenty of opportunities for those natural, unscripted moments.
Bringing Your Dog to a Family Photography Session
I always love when families include their dogs in their photos. They're part of the family, after all!
This family's Bernese Mountain Dog was such a fun addition to the session. Some of my favorite images are of the kids snuggled up against him, with everyone just being themselves.
Including a dog can bring a little extra unpredictability, but that's often where the best moments happen. We make time for a few photos with everyone together, and then let things unfold naturally.
